Sightseeing
There is so much to see in Russell & the surrounding areas. You can restrict yourself to just walking around Russell, or take the passenger ferry to Pahia, or venture further by car to Waitangi, Kerikeri, Kawakawa or even up to Cape Reinga if you're adventurous. The life on the water is glorious here and the cruises can't be missed, but there's history too... Also check out Dining & Shopping.
Pompallier Mission
NZ's oldest industrial building still houses the original printing press (restored & working) which was used to print te reo Maori translated bibles in the mid nineteenth century. Fascinating, seriously!
Flagstaff Hill & Reserve
Not just the best views of the bays & Russell & Waitangi (& a sneak peak of Russell Retreat!), it is also historic. The Union Jack first flew here in 1840 - and was chopped down 4 times in 5 years!
Long Beach
The Russell peninsula is littered with beaches, all of different character. Long Beach is a fabulous, family-friendly swimming beach, that is also great for walking or rock scrambling, plus there is Carl's Coffee Cart!
Tapeka Point
On the end of the peninsula, just beyond Russell, lies Tapeka. Beautiful rugged beaches & a steep walk up to the highest point with fabulous views around the bays, Tapeka Pa has some of the most extensive earthworks in the BOI.
Go to the cinema!
Cinema Kororareka shows some great current movies, so if you find yourself with a couple of hours to idle away, check out their scheduling. Films are shown in the Russell Town Hall.
This is only a small personal selection... more to come
